Mollejón natural stone in Costa Rica

Mollejón Stone in Costa Rica: Porosity, Sealing and Polished Floors

Mollejón is the most porous natural stone we carry — and the most rewarding when it is sealed properly.

Mollejón is more porous than coralina and carries the highest maintenance of the range. It only holds up long term with a high-quality topping sealer over a penetrating base coat — an investment that can approach the cost of the stone itself, and the thing that makes the difference. Best on vertical walls. It can also be ground and polished to a fine finish and sealed, which gives a high-end polished floor in rectangular format with no grout. Never pressure-wash it hard: aggressive pressure lifts the sealer and opens the pores.

Typical uses: vertical walls, facades, columns and polished interior floors. See the Mollejón range and formats, or request a quote.

Formats and finishes

Mollejón is supplied irregular, rectangular multi-use and as thin veneer panels, in rustic or polished finishes. The finish changes the character of the stone considerably — rustic reads raw and quarried, polished reads refined — so it is worth seeing samples of both. See the full range.

Cost, honestly

Natural stone is cheaper upfront in Costa Rica than our manufactured stone veneer. Manufactured is the premium option — chosen for tone control, consistent supply and seamless corner pieces, not to save money. Full comparison.

Grout, or none at all

On porous natural stone the grout is the weak point rather than the stone: it stains first, and tight joints grow algae quickly in this climate. Where the design allows, a rectangular format laid dry-stacked removes the problem completely.
