Manufactured stone veneer and architectural concrete, cast in Jacó. Matching corner pieces across every line.
Costa Rican quarry stone cut to order: irregular, rectangular multi-use and thin veneer panels.
Alongside the stone we manufacture, Deco Rock supplies Costa Rican natural stone — quarried here, then cut and finished to the format and finish your project needs.
Natural stone is cheaper upfront than manufactured veneer in Costa Rica, and it carries something cast stone cannot: genuine geological variation. The trade-off is that the variation is not controllable — each batch differs in tone, so what arrives on site may not match the reference photo.
The stones differ most in how they handle humidity. In order: Piedra Laja is the most resistant, then Sánchez, then Coralina, then Mollejón, which is the most porous and needs the most care.
The range
On porous stones like laja and mollejón the grout takes on moisture faster than the stone does. It stains sooner, and in very tight joints algae takes hold quickly.
The practical answer — and it saves a lot of money over the life of a wall — is a rectangular format laid dry-stacked, with no grout at all. A full stone wall with nothing to stain and nothing to grow.
Coralina and mollejón need sealing. Use a penetrating sealer as a base coat, then a topping sealer over it to close the surface pores. A penetrating sealer alone gets consumed too quickly on very porous stone.
A good sealer is a real investment — on mollejón it can approach the cost of the stone — but it is what makes the stone last. Reapply periodically.
Clean early and gently. Power-wash from a distance, lightly, at the first sign of buildup rather than waiting until it is severe. Aggressive close-range pressure lifts the sealer and opens the pores.
Piedra Laja, thanks to its low water absorption and high mechanical strength. Sánchez volcanic stone is second, Coralina third and Mollejón fourth — Mollejón is the most porous and needs the most maintenance.
Upfront, yes. In Costa Rica natural stone is genuinely cheaper than our manufactured veneer. Manufactured is the premium option, chosen for design control, consistency and corner pieces.
Coralina. It is porous, so it absorbs water and stays cool underfoot even in full sun. Use a bullnose piece for the pool edge and coping.
Laja handles floors well. Sánchez and mollejón are better on vertical walls, though mollejón can be ground, polished and sealed to make an excellent high-end floor in rectangular format.
