Stone cladding installation in progress

Installing Stone Cladding, Step by Step

The short version of a job done properly. For the full detail see the installation guide.

Step 1 — Check the wall

Cured, clean, flat and sound. Remove dust and anything loose.

Step 2 — Set out

Dry-lay a section on the ground first. Balance the tones and shapes before anything is fixed — this is the step people skip and regret.

Step 3 — Corners first

Fit corner pieces, then run the flats into them.

Step 4 — Work up the wall

Alternate piece lengths, stagger joints, keep the adhesive bed full behind each piece.

Step 5 — Grout or leave dry

Follow the rule for the line you are using: no grout for QuickFit, FastFit, ThinStone and FossilRock; grout for Hackett and IrishStone.

Step 6 — Clean and seal

Clean off as you go, before anything sets. Seal porous natural stone; manufactured veneer needs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What surfaces can stone veneer be fixed to?

Block, brick, fibre cement, exterior gypsum board and plywood. On block, concrete or brick it is enough to wet the surface well and remove all dust. A painted wall has to be scored back. On gypsum, timber or panel, fix expanded metal lath with nails or staples and apply a light render coat first.

What materials and tools do I need?

Mortar, an angle grinder with a diamond blade, a level, a mason's trowel, two buckets of clean water, safety glasses and gloves.

Where do I start?

Lay out a box of stone and offer the pieces up to the wall before fixing anything. Fit the corner pieces first, then work along the flats, alternating piece lengths so no visible pattern repeats.

Should the stone be wetted before fixing?

Yes. Wet the piece in clean water (always use bucket #1 with clean water), apply a thin coat of mortar to the back, and press it onto the wall by hand.
